March 17th,2018

Many people conceal their teeth even while smiling because of the yellow appearance of their teeth. Such embarrassment resists most of us to give a beautiful smile to our dear ones. People would like to consume teeth whitening products because of their intent to make their teeth more whitish and brighter.

Instead of applying such chemical products, we can prefer techniques which whiten our teeth naturally. What are they? Let us see.

Why do our teeth get yellowish colour?

Our teeth were once clean and appear whitish. The things we eat and drink are the main reason behind the stained teeth which look yellow. Improper brushing and flossing also lead to stained teeth..

Following are some factors causing teeth discoloration which makes our teeth turn yellow:

  • Drinking tea and coffee
  • Eating dark fruits
  • Smoking
  • Enamel erosion (It is due to aging)
  • Take an excess amount of fluoride
  • Antibiotics
  • And other general factors

Tips to whiten your teeth

Here is the list of teeth whitening techniques suggested by our dental specialists:

  1. Crunch more fruits

It is not possible to always keep toothpaste in our mouth to remove the stains. But we can keep some of the ingredients available in whitening products by eating fruits like strawberry, carrot, apple, pineapple and others.

Bromelain is the enzyme used in toothpaste to remove stains. It is rich in pineapples. The effect of this enzyme is not as toothpaste when compared to eating. But we can get a part of that stain removing effect by eating pineapple slices.

Similar to pineapple, Strawberry also helps you to make your teeth more whitish. A mixture of strawberry and baking soda produces a colour whitening effect without damaging the enamel.

Remember with the approach, you can observe a minimum amount of teeth colour change but you cannot get the same whitening effect which is given by commercial cleaning products.

  1. Oil Pulling

It is one of the traditional and cost-effective methods to clean your teeth. Generally, coconut is used by many people to clean their teeth. But you can use any oil as per your wish.

Besides coconut oil, we can use sunflower oil and sesame oil for this cleaning approach. The reason behind using coconut oil for oil pulling is it has more lauric acid which kills the bacteria in mouth effectively.

If you like to do oil pulling, use any one of the following methods to apply it:

  • Pour 1 teaspoon of oil in your mouth and swish the teeth with that oil for 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Add few drops of coconut oil to your toothbrush. Then brush your teeth with that.
  • Apply coconut oil to the corner of a clean cloth and gently rub your teeth with that cloth.

As oils are rich in microbial properties, oil pulling helps you to remove bacteria that cause inflammation, gum diseases from your mouth along with teeth whitening.

  1. Brush your teeth with Baking Soda and Hydrogen Peroxide

Baking Soda has the ability to create an alkaline environment in your mouth. It is essential to remove bacteria that are present in our mouth and prevent them from growing further.

Hydrogen Peroxide is an antibacterial agent. Rinsing your mouth with a mixture of water and hydrogen peroxide helps you to exclude the germs present in your mouth.

Add a small amount of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda to your toothpaste. Then brush your teeth with that mixture. While brushing your teeth with this mixture, we advise you to avoid rubbing the teeth too hard because it damages the enamel of your tooth.

If you are not ready or hesitating to use baking soda and hydrogen peroxide to clean your teeth, then you may use White Kaolin Clay. Add a little amount of water to small amount of white kaolin clay and then apply the mixture on your teeth. You will see the change in your teeth colour.

Conclusion

Before applying these techniques or any of these techniques, you should maintain a proper oral hygiene routine like brushing in the morning and before going to bed, rinse your mouth after every meal, etc.

It is wise to make a regular dental visit and to get Professional teeth cleaning at regular intervals to keep your teeth white for a long time.
