April 16th,2018

The Dental specialists in our dental hospital provide the right dental treatments for our patients to cure the oral and dental problems. But in case of oral surgery like bone grafting and Dental implant surgery, the treated person need to follow certain instructions given by the dental surgeons.

The aftercare instructions are provided in order to reduce the healing time and for faster recovery.

In this post, we have described certain instructions to be followed for a while after implanting artificial teeth or other oral surgeries.

Common discomforts after dental surgery

After doing an oral surgery or fixing implants, you may feel certain complications in the initial stage. Such things are common in dental surgeries and they are explained in this section.

If you feel or experience these discomforts after oral surgery, simply ignore it. Meanwhile, if the discomfort level is quite high, visit your dentist.

Pain in the implant or surgery site

There is a slight pain in and around the area where surgery or implant is done. The rate of pain decreases in the following days. You can get rid of this pain by taking pain medications like Tylenol, Naprosyn or Aspirin.

It is better to get such pain medications prescribed by your dental surgeon because some medications will lead to more gum bleeding.

Minor Bleeding

It is usual that there is a little bleeding around the surgical site for 24 hours. Similarly, you will notice red or pink colored saliva in your mouth for the next 2-3 days. This is also caused by bleeding.

Both the things are common after oral surgery. You don’t need to scare about these.

Swollen face

The face of the person who has undergone dental surgery or implants becomes swelling for the next 4-5 days. Then it decreases and his/her face appears normal. Due to swelling, there is a pain while opening the mouth and swallowing food.

Post dental surgery instructions

After dental surgery including implant surgery, you should not disturb the surgery site by touching or placing the finger in the particular area, rising and spitting for the next 24 hours. It may contaminate or disturb the surrounding gum tissues which obstruct the healing process.

Take Antibiotics

Dentists prescribe Antibiotics to avoid infections after oral surgery around the surgical site. Hence it is important to take the antibodies regularly as per the prescribed level until it is finished.

Proper intake of medications

Similar to antibodies, you need to consume the drugs and medications prescribed by your dental surgeon for quick healing. The prescribed drugs are not flexible for the health condition of few people. In such cases, they feel certain health issues like vomiting, skin rash and others.

In such cases, it is wise to stop the medications and go to your dentist and get dental suggestions from him/her.

Eat soft foods

The patient needs to avoid solid foods for the first 24 hours after surgery. Then he/she need to maintain a diet which comprises mostly liquid food items and soft food items until healing.

Incorporate the following soft food items in your diet for few days after the surgery:
• Pasta
• Eggs
• Creamed Cereals
• Mashed potatoes
• Milkshake
• Applesauce

Note:
Don’t use a straw while drinking juices and other liquids. You may take soup but avoid consuming hot soup or at high temperatures.

Avoid Smoking

Smokers have to quit smoking until the surgical site heals completely. The reason is consuming tobacco infects the implant and surgery site that disrupts the healing process. Hence the patient requires more time to recover.

Besides longer recovery period, the infections caused by smoking will lead to failure of the dental implants and bone grafts.

Maintain Oral Hygiene

After 24 hours of the surgery, you can start brushing your teeth. Keep an efficient oral hygiene routine like brushing, flossing and frequently rinsing your mouth to eliminate bacteria from your mouth.

Note:
It is better to avoid rinsing your mouth hydrogen peroxide and mouthwashes for 14 days after the dental surgery.

Conclusion

With the advancement of dentistry, certain dental surgeries have been available today to maintain our oral health. But we should follow the aftercare guidelines instructed by our dentists. Otherwise, the dental surgeries also become a key factor to put our oral health at risk.
