The eruption of teeth in different stages are classified as Incisors, Canines, Premolars & molars and then Wisdom Teeth. Dentists term wisdom teeth as third molars. It usually erupts between the ages of 17 and 21.
As the tooth erupts after a person becomes mature, it is known as wisdom tooth. It appears in the last of the mouth. Normally, our mouth contains 28 teeth. It will become 32 after the eruption of 4 wisdom teeth.
A common fact regarding wisdom teeth is it causes several oral issues including gum diseases. Hence, wisdom teeth removal is required to prevent such issues.
Wisdom teeth are not necessary for us but they are erupting. This is due to the progression of our ancestor’s diet that includes food particles like roots, raw meats, nuts, etc. Unlike our ancestors, this current generation people are consuming soft food particles.
Hence wisdom teeth are not mandatory to consume such soft food particles.
The negativities of wisdom teeth arises due to the lack of room in our mouth for these 4 teeth. It is also because of the soft food particles.
Most of the food items we eat are not rich in nutrients, Vitamins (especially Vitamin K2) which makes our jaws cannot grow wider unlike our ancestors who got these nutrients from meats and nuts.
As our jaws are not getting fully developed, teeth erupt after molars (Wisdom teeth) cannot get a space in our mouth.
Since the wisdom teeth cannot get a room to erupt, it began to erupt in sideways, at different angles in the jaw and are misaligned. Wisdom tooth is also a reason for dental cavities.
Because of the tooth’s eruption at different angles, gum flaps cover the teeth. The problems caused by such coverings include:
• In some cases, our gums cover the wisdom tooth and the tooth stays underneath the gum. This means the wisdom teeth is trapped in our jaw. Such trappings lead to cyst development which affects the root of the teeth and bone support.
• Similarly, wisdom teeth erupt or appear partially through the gums. As the gum covers most of the tooth, it is difficult to see and clean the tooth. If a tooth is not properly cleaned, the higher the chances of bacterial infection. Such oral bacteria infects our gums and causes certain gum diseases.
• If the wisdom tooth does not have a space to erupt, it pushes and wears down the adjacent teeth in its eruption.
Wisdom teeth cannot be clearly seen. Even Dentists can identify the wisdom tooth with the help of X-rays. But there are few symptoms with which we can identify the infection or damage caused by the wisdom teeth. It includes:
• Pain in Jaw
• Nasty or undesirable taste in your mouth
• Swelling around the jaw
• Bleeding gums
• Bad breathe
As mentioned at the beginning of this post, wisdom tooth extraction is the only way to cure or prevent these dental issues. If you consult your Dentist or Dental surgeon, they will also prescribe this.
Similarly, such extraction of wisdom teeth is not required if the teeth are correctly aligned, erupted completely and healthy. If the wisdom tooth is developed like this, it will not cause any oral risk and need not to be extracted.
Do you remember the proverb “Prevention is better than cure”? It is wise to visit your dentist regularly and check up your dental health. It will help us to identify wisdom tooth when it begins to erupt and develop.
Removing wisdom tooth as soon as you identify it is the prime thing. As wisdom teeth erupt in the later teens and early 20s, people can remove wisdom teeth during this age range.
As the wisdom tooth begins to erupt, it is less dense and does not have enough support. Hence extraction is very easy and does not cause any serious problems. Besides this, healing is quite fast for younger people when compared to elders.
If you do not extract the tooth in early age, it will develop and get a strong bone support. Extracting after such development is difficult and may damage the surrounding nerves.
Wisdom tooth extraction is a painless one. It is done after appropriate antibodies are injected. Hence you do not feel any pain while the tooth is removing. If you extracted your wisdom tooth, you will feel little difficulty in eating for a while or until it is healed.
Following are some of the food items which you can consume after removing wisdom tooth:
• Scrambled eggs
• Mashed Potatoes
• Protein shakes
• Basic Creamy Polenta
• Smooth Hummus
• Mango Caprese
If you are not still clear about your wisdom tooth or struggling in making a decision whether to remove it or not, consult a dentist and follow the guidelines suggested by the dental health specialist.
