What is sensitive tooth and how it is caused?
To say simply, a tooth which causes pain or discomfort when any substance touches it is called sensitive tooth because it is affected by teeth sensitivity.
Generally, our tooth is made up of a less dense particle named Dentin that is stretched to the tooth’s root canal. It contains microscopic tubules filled with tiny nerve endings. Dentin is covered (or protected) with Cementum below the gum line and a harder outer layer called enamel.
If the dentin gets exposed or loses its protection, then the tubules present in dentin allow the food particles we eat to reach cells and nerves of the tooth. This leads to the hypersensitivity.
Enamel erosion is the base cause of sensitive teeth. It may occur due to any of the following reasons:
• Tooth cavities
• Using hard toothbrush or brushing the teeth too hard
• Teeth grinding
• Consuming high acidic foods
• Fractured or broken teeth
Besides these, a common cause that leads to sensitive teeth is gum recession. When your gum line recedes, it provides a way to expose dentin.
